Monash University Storm’s Division 1 team has held off the ACU Sovereigns to win by three goals at the State Netball and Hockey Centre on Wednesday Night.
The Storm trailed by three goals at the first break, but managed to level the scores by half time. A 13 goal third quarter from the Storm helped break the game open, with Shae Gee scoring 11 of her 16 goals in the term.
Storm coach Jacqui Hansen said she was happy to get away with the win in a physical contest.
“To be honest I was just really pleased to get away with the win. Sometimes when you have a really good win, like we did last week, the next week’s a danger game,” she said.
“We knew from the first time we played Ballarat that they were going to be a physically tough team and they brought that.”
The Storm were able to mix up the positions on the court for the first time in a long time, and tested out different dynamics up forward and through the mid-court.
“It was a luxury that I haven’t had for a while, we had 12 players, so it’s nice to be able to work through some different combinations and see what works best,” Hansen said.
“It just gives us a lot of different options…we haven’t really had that.”
Monash’s defence was a standout for the second week in a row, as Kath Vickers and Maddie Byrne continuing their excellent form.
“I thought our whole defence end played really well, particularly in the second half, Maddie (Byrne), Ebony (Roberts) and Kath (Vickers) really shut down their goalers,” Hansen said.
“The defensive pressure, I think that’s what got us over the line in the end, and the way the defenders brought the ball out of defence into our attack end really made a big difference.”
The Storm are still a mathematical chance for finals, and will be hoping to make it three consecutive wins when they face the bottom placed Yarra Valley Grammar Ariels this Sunday at Knox Regional Netball Centre.
